Scientific Discovery

Science is woven throughout the voyage. Interested divers will be collecting benthic animals (under permit) for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Participants will have daily access to the scientific team and are welcome to assist with expedition-supported projects.

Voyage

This itinerary is for guidance only. We are going to of the most remote locations in the world. Plans may vary depending on ice, weather, and wildlife conditions. Flexibility is paramount for all on expedition cruises.

Day 1: Embarking

Our voyage begins where the world drops off. Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city on the planet, is located on the far southern tip of South America. Starting in the afternoon, we embark from this small resort town on Tierra del Fuego, nicknamed “The End of the World,” and sail the mountain-fringed Beagle Channel for the remainder of the evening.

Days 2-3: Crossing the Drake

Over the next two days on the Drake Passage, you enjoy some of the same experiences encountered by the great polar explorers who first charted these regions: cool salt breezes, rolling seas, maybe even a fin whale spouting up sea spray. After passing the Antarctic Convergence – Antarctica’s natural boundary, formed when north-flowing cold waters collide with warmer sub-Antarctic seas – you are in the circum-Antarctic upwelling zone. Not only does the marine life change, the avian life changes too. Wandering albatrosses, grey-headed albatrosses, black-browed albatrosses, light-mantled sooty albatrosses, cape pigeons, southern fulmars, Wilson’s storm petrels, blue petrels, and Antarctic petrels are a few of the birds you might see.

Days 4-7: The Antarctic Peninsula

On one side of the ship rise 10,000-foot snow-covered peaks; on the other, ice-shrouded islands and towering icebergs. No expedition to Antarctica is complete without stepping onto the seventh continent, but Antarctica offers far more than a single landing. The whales, birds, seals, penguins, and iconic ice define the experience, along with a palpable sense of history—abandoned research stations, active scientific bases, and shipwrecks that evoke the Golden Age of Antarctic exploration.

Days 8: The South Shetlands

The volcanic islands of the South Shetlands are windswept and often cloaked in mist, but they do offer subtle pleasures: There’s a wide variety of flora (mosses, lichens, flowering grasses) and no small amount of fauna (gentoo penguins, chinstrap penguins, southern giant petrels).

In Deception Island, the ship plunges into a flooded caldera. Here we can explore an abandoned whaling station, and thousands of cape petrels – along with kelp gulls, brown and south polar skuas, and Antarctic terns. A good hike is a possibility in this fascinating and desolate volcanic landscape.

Day 11: Return to Ushuaia

And with that, we return to our original port along the Beagle channel where we can enjoy the views of the Patagonia region in Tierra del Fuego.

Here is where we part ways, some can choose to further explore the hiking and scenery the region has to offer, while many will conclude their trip and begin the trek home.

Days 9-10: Crossing the Drake

Though we conclude our time in Antarctica the journey is far from over. These days at sea are where voyagers can reminisce and share their experiences. Concurrently our scientists and volunteers will be hard at work cataloging every specimen and finalizing data collection.

Reserve Your Spot!

What's included?

The cabin price includes expedition space, shore & Zodiac excursions, hiking, glacier travel, rubber boots, all shipboard guiding fees, and all meals on board the vessel per person. It does not include flights, airport transfers, hotels, departure taxes, alcoholic drinks, personal expenses, food on shore, land based tours, travel insurance (mandatory), dive equipment (other than tanks and weights), dive insurance (mandatory if diving) and personal clothing.

Cabin Selection

One of the choices you need to make early is which type of cabin you want for our Antarctic cruise. The Hondius offers a variety of spaces to accommodate various budgets and group needs. While you will not be spending a lot of time in your cabin when we are at the southern islands or the Antarctic Peninsula itself, we do have extended times during crossings when you are likely to want to relax in your cabins for longer periods.

Scuba Diving, $1,150

Scuba diving will be available, but the number of divers is extremely limited. You will need to have completed at least 30 drysuit dives. Cylinders and weights are included; you provide all other equipment.

Argentine Excursions

Depending on interest and availability we may coordinate additional activities early in the trip in Buenos Aires and Ushuaia such as group tango classes, museum trips, or hiking upon request.
